On my older GTX1070 it was way slower, about 6fps. For the tasks I do on a single RTX3080, I get almost real-time upscaling performance, about 20fps. Hugely dependent on your GPU configuration and performance. How fast is it to convert a lot of clips?.

It's faster for them to export at 1080p and upscale to UHD than export natively at UHD with very little noticeable difference in resulting quality. I know a couple of CGI/3D studios that use it extensively, pretty much exactly as you're describing.
